Awards

Throughout the event a team of judges visit the pits and hold interviews to determine a range of judged awards.

There are about 20 awards in total, all listed on FIRST's site. Teams only win a single judged award at each event, so there's plenty to go around.

Awards are presented during the elimination bracket during the mandatory timeouts between matches.

Award Types

Event Awards

Most awards are for your team's actions or robot at an event. Judges will ask questions about the whole season (and sometimes team history), but part of the award is how we show it off at the event.

Outreach Awards

The most significant awards, Impact and Engineering Inspiration, are based on our community outreach over multiple years. Students will write and submit an essay during build season, and then deliver a presentation at the event.

Individual Awards

There are two individual awards as well:

  • FIRST Leadership Award: Awarded to a student for their leadership qualities, based on an essay written by their mentors and an interview
  • Woodie Flowers Award: Awarded to a mentor for their mentorship qualities, based on an essay written by the students (only awarded at Provincials)
